CURRENCY

In Helsinki, the euro (€) is the official currency. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, and Finland is largely a cashless society. You can pay by card almost everywhere, including public transport, shops, and restaurants. ATMs are available throughout the city, especially in the city center and at Helsinki Airport. Currency exchange services are available at Helsinki Airport and selected banks, though using cards is usually the easiest option.

POWER OUTLETS

In Finland, power plugs and sockets are of type C and F. The standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. If your devices operate within the 220–240 V range (as in most of Europe, the UK, Australia, Asia, and Africa), you will not need a voltage converter—only a plug adapter if necessary.

MEDICATIONS

When preparing for your stay in Finland, it is important to ensure you have valid health insurance covering your entire stay. EU/EEA visitors should bring a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Visitors from outside the EU are advised to have comprehensive travel health insurance. If you take prescription medications, bring them in their original packaging along with a copy of the prescription.

AIR TRAVEL

Helsinki is served by Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL), located about 20 km north of the city center. The airport is well connected to the city by train, bus, taxi, and ride services. Trains (I and P lines) run frequently and reach Helsinki Central Station in about 30 minutes. Several international and domestic airlines operate regular flights to and from Helsinki.

TRAIN TRAVEL

Helsinki Central Station is the main railway hub in Finland, offering excellent connections to major Finnish cities such as Tampere, Turku, and Oulu. High-speed and intercity trains are operated by VR (Finnish Railways). Tickets can be purchased online, via mobile apps, or at station kiosks.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Helsinki has an efficient and user-friendly public transport system operated by HSL. Transportation options include buses, trams, metro, commuter trains, and ferries (including routes to nearby islands). Tickets are zone-based and can be purchased via the HSL mobile app, ticket machines, or travel cards. Walking and cycling are also popular and convenient ways to explore the city.

VISA AND ENTRY

Finland is part of the Schengen Area. For stays of less than 90 days within a 180-day period, citizens of certain countries require a Schengen visa. Visa requirements depend on nationality and may change over time. It is strongly recommended to check the latest visa regulations with the Finnish embassy or consulate in your country before traveling.
